The afternoon practice finished, Austin Rivers plops himself onto the aluminum bleachers next to the second-floor gym of the 1st Presbyterian Church in downtown Orlando. The nation’s No. 1 recruit takes a long swig from his bottled water and then reaches for his car keys, which are attached to a Duke Blue Devils lanyard.

He had just sunk a free throw (nothing but net) that spared him and his Winter Park High School teammates a series of post-practice gassers.

“I’m used to it,” says Rivers, who helped lead Winter Park to back-to-back 6A state championships, the first in central Florida high school hoops history. No wonder the team’s recently ordered title rings say “Made History” on one of the sides.

Confidence is Rivers calling card as he both wants and demands the ball in pressure situations. He is a cold-blooded assassin that has the full package of offensive weapons at his disposal and plays without fear of failure.

He has range out to 28-feet, uses the jab-step as well as seasoned pros, an excellent mid-range game, can finish through contact when attacking the basket and has the best NBA-level floater over the bigs of any player in the high school or college ranks.

Austin Rivers, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Winter Park (Fla.), is rated the No. 1 overall basketball prospect in the nation by several recruiting services. He has already signed a letter of intent with Duke, and he’ll be playing in Florida’s high school final four Friday—attempting to pick up his third career state championship ring by the end of this weekend.

This week, he talked to Sporting News’ Brian McLaughlin about what it’s like to be Boston Celtics’ head coach Doc Rivers’ son, what he’s looking forward to at Duke and several other issues on his mind. I bet you wouldn’t mind playing with Kyrie Irving next year, would you? What do you know about his future plans at Duke?

government shutdown 2011

publicans disputed Democrats’ account of events and stressed any talk of a deal is premature.

“There are a lot of numbers that have been discussed and thrown around,” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said on Tuesday. “The fact is, there’s not an agreement [among] numbers. And secondly, nothing’s agreed to until everything is agreed to.”

According to Democrats, House Republicans had–at one point in negotiations–said they were willing to cap discretionary spending at $1.052 trillion, which translates to a $37 billion cut from fiscal 2010, and a $76 billion cut from President Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget proposal.

Budget talks resumed to avert a U.S. government shutdown, with Vice President Joe Biden meeting tonight with Senate Democratic leaders who are working to craft a spending-cut package Republicans might accept.

Aides to Democratic and Republican lawmakers negotiating a deal are working toward cuts totaling about $33 billion, said a person familiar with the talks. The person cautioned, though, that no firm agreements have been reached.
